Mario Jose de Souza Machado, a Portuguese-Chinese descendant, was born in Shanghai, China on April 22, 1935. His father, Carlos Jacinto de Lourdes Gouveia Furtado Machado, served as a vice-chancellor for the Portuguese Consulate of Shanghai, while his mother, Maria Teresa de Sousa, was a homemaker.
